A SALTY fitness retreat in Nicaragua is a luxury group fitness trip in the hills above San Juan del Sur, on the Pacific coast. Home base is a 5-star private villa property with three infinity pools overlooking the ocean, a weight room, a spa, and a cold plunge. Daily coached workouts, optional surf lessons, a catamaran day, and a crew of 25-32 guests - most arriving solo. The sweatiest trip in the SALTY lineup, with the softest landing.
Why Nicaragua
San Juan del Sur is one of Central America's legendary surf towns for a reason: a horseshoe bay, hills studded with villas, surf breaks groomed by offshore winds, and a town that wakes up slowly and stays up late. Sunday Funday - the town's famous all-afternoon pool-hopping tradition - is on the weekly calendar like it's municipal law. The sunsets look staged.
Nicaragua is also still the under-visited one, which works entirely in your favour: Costa Rica's landscapes and waves without Costa Rica's crowds or prices. We set up a short drive from the heart of the action - close enough to jump in, far enough away to actually sleep.
What You'll Actually Do
This trip turns the sweat dial all the way up, then hands you an infinity pool:
- Morning Crew at sunrise on a yoga deck with a view that makes 6:30 a.m. feel reasonable
- Daily SALTY Sweats - strength and conditioning using the weight room, squat racks, poolside Pilates, and a sprawling sandy beach. New training format every session
- SALTY Olympics - team relays, pool games, trash talk, trophies. Taken exactly as seriously as it sounds
- Sunday Funday - San Juan del Sur's famous Sunday tradition, done as a crew
- A catamaran day on the Pacific - swim stops, good snacks, sunset from the water
- Optional surf lessons with local instructors on the beginner-friendly breaks offshore
- A choose-your-own-adventure day - mountain hike, horseback ride, a tour of colonial Granada, surf, spa, or aggressive lounging
- Breath workshops, Soul Work, and cold plunge recovery between the loud parts
On the trip meter this one runs a 9 on sweat and a 7 on rest, which sounds contradictory until you've napped by an infinity pool with sore legs.
Who It's For
Fitness-minded travellers who also love a dance floor. Solo travellers - around 70% of guests on this trip come alone - and returning SALTY guests who want a louder, sweatier round. First-time surfers do well here too; the breaks below the villa are about as friendly as the Pacific gets.
If your ideal trip is quiet, culturally packed sightseeing, this leans social instead. If "infinity pool, big workout, bigger dinner" sounds like a personality you'd like to try on for a week, welcome.
Where It Happens
Home base is Orquidea del Sur, a 5-star private villa property in the hills above San Juan del Sur: three buildings, three infinity pools facing the Pacific, pool tables, a weight room, a spa, a cold plunge, and more lounge space than one group can reasonably use. We try anyway.
Getting there: fly into Managua (MGA), about a 2.5-hour transfer, or into Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR), which is often cheaper and easier from the US, then cross the border with our coordinated transfer. Both routes are well-trodden.
How a SALTY Trip in Nicaragua Works
Book a room, pick an airport, and show up - training, meals, excursions, the boat, and the logistics are handled. Every session and excursion is optional. The only rule at SALTY is that everything is optional except fun.
Trips start from $2,249 for the week. Our slogan is "Make fun of wellness," and a squat rack twenty steps from an infinity pool is us saying it with a straight face.
