About the Retreat

The 2026 trip taught us one thing: Sri Lanka deserves more than a one-stop retreat. The country's too beautiful. So we built this one around the diversity, starting in the highlands where the mornings come in cool and the views go on forever, then make our way south with a stop in Udawalawe for a safari adventure, before we settle in the South on a stretch of surf coast in our own private centre.

The first two days are in Ella, deep in tea country. You'll wake up to mist clearing off the hills, hike before breakfast, and learn that "rest day" doesn't have to mean "boring day." We're staying at Arana Eco Lodge — the same place 2026 guests still talk about — with incredible food, monkeys greeting you in the morning, breathtaking views from bed, and excursions of all sorts to choose from.

Then we head south. Our first stop is a night in Wellawaya before we explore the Udawalawe safari. Lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!

From there our scenic travel day continues as we make our way to our home for the final week. We've bought out Dreamsea Ahangama entirely — pool, restaurant, beach access, surfboard access, the break out front. For a week it's ours. Mornings are yoga, surf, eat, and relax. The rest of the day fills itself: workouts, hammocks, Galle Fort excursion, sunset volleyball, group dinners filled with laughter.

The Verdict

Everything you need to plan your trip.

Colombo (CMB) — Bandaranaike International Airport. We provide an inbound shuttle (3 scheduled departure times). The drive to our first stop in Ella takes ~6–7 hours through scenic countryside.

Inbound shuttle departure times will be confirmed ~3 months before the trip. You MUST plan your flight to land in time for one of the three shuttles — late arrivals will need to arrange and pay for their own private transfer. We do this so the group arrives together and the trip starts on time.

Yes. Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) — easy online application at eta.gov.lk, ~$35 USD, approved within 24 hours.

Ahangama is on Sri Lanka's south coast — a stretch with several beginner-friendly breaks within easy paddle. Water is warm (27–29°C / 80–84°F), no wetsuit needed. February is peak surf season on the south coast. The Dreamsea Level 0 package covers all levels and includes board rentals all week.

None. Most SALTY guests start as total beginners. The Level 0 package is designed for first-timers. Experienced surfers can upgrade to Level 1 or 2 with the same instructors.

Skip it. Pool, hammock, town, yoga, optional excursions — there's no attendance taking. The week is built so you can dial in or dial out as you want.

Yes. Sri Lanka is one of the safer destinations in the region for solo travelers. Standard precautions apply. We move as a group, with logistics handled — you don't need to navigate anything alone unless you want to.

Peak dry season on the south coast. Daytime ~28–32°C (82–90°F), warm ocean, low rain. Ella is cooler at elevation — bring layers for highland mornings. Pack a light rain layer just in case.

20 guests + 3 coaches + 1 content creator = 24 total. Small by SALTY standards — intimate, but enough to find your people.

Yes. Many guests add days in Colombo, Kandy, Mirissa (whale watching), or Yala/Udawalawe (safari). We can help you think through logistics.

Daily breakfasts at all properties. 5 lunches + 5 dinners at Dreamsea. Group dinners at Arana. Otherwise meals are on your own at local restaurants — Sri Lanka has incredible food and we'll point you at the best spots. Dietary restrictions accommodated with advance notice.

No. The workouts are scalable. Surfing is more timing than strength. The only fitness required is the ability to swim and walk. If you can breathe and move, you're qualified.

All payments, including the $350 deposit, are non-refundable. We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation and interruption.
