A SALTY fitness retreat in Sri Lanka is a multi-region surf, fitness, and adventure trip: it starts in Ella, in highland tea country, passes through Udawalawe for a safari, and lands on the south coast at Ahangama, where SALTY buys out an entire beachfront property with the surf break out front. Daily workouts, yoga, surf sessions, and a group of 20 - most travelling solo. It's the deep-immersion trip: one country, three different worlds.
Why Sri Lanka
Our first Sri Lanka trip taught us one thing: one beach town isn't enough for this country. It's too beautiful, and too varied, to park at a single stop.
So the trip is built around the diversity. Ella first - tea plantations, mist clearing off the hills, the Nine Arches Bridge, sunrise hikes, and monkeys auditing your breakfast. Then south through temples and waterfalls, with a dawn safari in Udawalawe National Park along the way. Then the coast: Ahangama, on Sri Lanka's southern surf belt, where warm Indian Ocean waves roll in basically year-round on their season, and Galle Fort - a UNESCO World Heritage site - is twenty minutes up the road.
Most trips show you a country's beach. This one shows you the country.
What You'll Actually Do
Eleven days, two regions, no dead time:
- Highland days in Ella - sunrise hikes, yoga in the hills, and your pick of the famous scenic train ride, a tea estate visit, or a Sri Lankan cooking class
- A dawn safari in Udawalawe - elephants, mostly, and the good kind of speechless
- Daily SALTY workouts on the coast - strength, MetCon, boxing, sand sprints, ocean swims, beachfront circuits, rooftop flows. This trip runs hot; bring your energy
- Surf every day if you want it - the break rolls in directly in front of the property. Surf sessions start with grabbing a board and walking thirty seconds. Beginners get a full lesson package with 10+ hours of instruction
- Morning and sunset yoga to balance the intensity
- A Galle Fort day trip - Dutch-colonial streets, ramparts, and sunset, then back to Ahangama for a big group dinner
- Optional add-ons like a Yala safari, Mirissa whale watching in season, and cooking classes
Nights end with Sri Lankan feasts - rice and curry spreads, kottu, fresh seafood - and the occasional dance floor.
Who It's For
Solo travellers ready for a proper adventure - about 65% of guests arrive alone, and a 20-person crew crossing a country together bonds faster than any single-resort trip could manage. It suits surf-curious beginners (the lesson package is genuinely thorough), intermediate surfers who want an uncrowded wave, and anyone who's had Sri Lanka on the list but didn't want to plan it alone.
It's adventure and comfort, not luxury and not roughing it. If you need resort amenities and a set-it-and-forget-it beach week, pick a different trip. If you want to actually know a country by the end, this is the one.
Where It Happens
Two homes. First, Arana Eco Lodge above Ella - open-air dining, hand-built porches, slow food, and mountain views from bed. Then Dreamsea Ahangama on the south coast: a beachfront property with a pool, restaurant, movement space, volleyball court, and the surf break out front - bought out entirely, so the whole place is ours.
Fly into Colombo (CMB), Sri Lanka's international hub. SALTY runs scheduled shuttles from the airport, and ground transport across all regions of the trip is included.
How a SALTY Trip in Sri Lanka Works
Book your spot, land in Colombo, get on the shuttle, and the country unfolds from there - accommodation, transport, training, surf, safari, and most meals, all organized. Everything is optional except fun.
Trips start from $2,949 for eleven days. SALTY's slogan is "Make fun of wellness" - and doing burpees on a beach you reached via tea country and a safari is exactly what we mean by it.
